Residents claim their lives are being made a misery by anti-social behaviour in a block of flats.

They are calling for action to be taken and security to be increased in Chalmers Crescent, East Kilbride.

It comes just days after three people were rescued by firefighters after a blaze broke out in the flats. The alarm was raised shortly after 8pm on Tuesday following the fire.

It's understood two people came into the building to gain access to the flat where the couple were rescued from.

They were said to have been refused entry and set fire to furniture that was being temporarily stored on the landing.

Charred walls and debris were still visible at the block of flats and police investigations are continuing.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said: "The council has ignored repeated pleas for the security door to be repaired and to deal with the high levels of anti-social behaviour that occurs on a daily basis within the flats.

"A minority of the residents are drug and alcohol addicts and regularly allow other addicts into their houses.

"This has caused mayhem with the addicts who live there running out of drugs or money for drugs and kicking other residents doors in when they are not at home and stealing their property.

"There have been various assaults on residents who are just going about their business by these people causing all residents to live in fear."

Residents say South Lanarkshire Council fixed the security door last summer, but claim they were not given keys to the door. The door was then allegedly kicked in.

It was also claimed an elderly man was rehoused after having problems with his home being used as a drinking den.

A South Lanarkshire Council spokesperson said: "The block of flats at 25-55 Chalmers Crescent was badly affected by fire. Following the fire it was noted the security door was not operational but has since been repaired.

"The council was not aware of the security door not working prior to this incident or of keys not being available to all residents. We have now arranged for residents to be contacted to ensure they all have a key to the entrance door.

"We have received recent complaints from one resident concerning the conduct of neighbours and these complaints are currently being investigated.

"Upon completion of these investigations we will take appropriate action."
