THE countdown is on in the search to find healthcare heroes across Greater Glasgow.

Organisers of the Scottish Health Awards are seeking nominations from members of the public to help reward NHS staff, support workers, volunteers and specialist teams who go the extra mile to provide outstanding patient care.

They want the people who work in GP surgeries, hospitals, dentists or out in the community to be recognised for their dedication.

Last year there were five finalists from the Glasgow area, with Jennifer Rodgers, lead nurse at Yorkhill Hospital, taking home the top nurse award.

Meanwhile, Gillian Mackinnon and Linsey McLaren, from Drumchapel Health Centre, were crowned the best team.

This year there are 16 categories, including awards for volunteers, care for mental health, services to women and children, as well as the renowned doctors award.

Andrew Robertson, chairman of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity to recognise those who provide the best healthcare to people across Glasgow and Clyde.

"Our staff work hard to ensure that local services are delivered to the highest standards.

"Make sure you nominate your local healthcare hero and give them the recognition they deserve."

The accolades will be given out at a prestigious ceremony being held on November 6 at the Corn Exchange in Edinburgh.

A total of three finalists will be chosen for each category by a specially selected panel of judges.

Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing, Alex Neil, said the awards celebrate staff who work behind the scenes in support roles as well as frontline healthcare workers.

He added: "I often get to witness the outstanding work that goes into providing our health and social care services to the people of Scotland.

"And I continue to be truly humbled by the tireless commitment and compassion shown by the staff of our NHS in Scotland and in its partners in delivering these services.

"It is only right that we shine a spotlight on some of the most exceptional people who go that extra mile to deliver the best of care and to that end."
