OAP refused 'miracle' drug by health board

A HEALTH board has been accused of imposing a "death sentence" on a pensioner by her distraught family after it continued to deny her treatment for a life-threatening condition.

Joyce Juszczak, 65, from Gourock, was told that health board officials at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde consider her condition has not progressed sufficiently to allow it to prescribe "miracle" drug eculizumab for paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria.

The latest decision comes after Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon asked for a review of Mrs Juszczak's case after she met the patient and her family last month. PNH leaves victims at risk of kidney failure and potentially fatal blood clots.

In July, NHSGGC rejected an appeal for the drug – said to virtually abolish the risk of clotting – by Mrs Juszczak, who describes herself as a "walking timebomb".
