A FOOTBALL fan is bringing together Old Firm supporters for a match in aid of struggling families.

Joseph Reid, from Bridgeton, said he was inspired to set up a charity match after auctioning off a signed Celtic shirt.

The kindhearted 38-year-old managed to raise £220 for the city's North East Foodbank, in Helenvale Street, after he auctioned off his signed Tshirt..

Amateur footballer Mr Reid, who works for a property company, said: "My mate helps out at the foodbank and I really wanted do something more to help them.

"A lot of people don't realise but their friends or family could be having to use foodbanks.

"People don't know how bad it is."

He came up with the idea of a charity game between Rangers and Celtic. It is expected to take place at 2pm on January 18 at Glasgow Green Football Centre.

Mr Reid said: "I was hoping to raise a couple of hundred pounds, but we've already raised £1500.

"I'm still getting people handing in prizes, everyone has been so kind.

"We auctioned places for people to take part at a minimum of £25 per person but some of the guys were giving us £100.

"It's getting so big that we're thinking of making it an annual event."

A total of 40 people - 20 in each side - aged between 18 and 65 will battle it out in the game.

Celtic fan Mr Reid said many of his friends were Rangers supporters.

He said: "We're all good friends and it's a bit of friendly rivalry."

There will be a gathering afterwards at a local pub.

Mr Reid has urged anyone who wants to come to watch the game to bring a bag of food.

He said: "We're hoping to get bags of food round the pitch.

"We want to collect as much as possible for the people who need it."
