A-listers braved wet and windy weather to walk the red carpet at London's Royal Festival Hall last night.

A tearful Sheridan Smith won best lead actress for ITV drama Mrs Biggs, based on the life of the wife of Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs.

She thanked the team behind the show, adding: "I can't believe it."

Host Graham Norton's chat show won the award for entertainment show.

The Irish comic accepted his award before returning to hosting duties.

Presenter Clare Balding, who won a Bafta Special Award, said she was "aware this would not have happened if it weren't for the magic of last summer", referring to the London Olympics.

Ben Whishaw won best actor for Richard II (The Hollow Crown), and looked stunned.

He joked: "I was just hoping it would be one of the others just so I wouldn't have to come up here and say anything."

The award for reality and constructed factual show went Made in Chelsea.

Star Francis Boulle said: "Who would have thought you would get a Bafta for being posh?"

Comedian Alan Carr picked up the award for entertainment performance for his chatshow.

Steve Coogan won best male performance in a comedy for Welcome to the Places of My Life.

The soap award went to the BBC's EastEnders. Star Shane Richie told fans: "This is especially to each and every one of you for supporting EastEnders."
