TEN orphaned ducklings have been rescued after being found wandering in various built up areas across the city.

A member of the public contacted the Scottish SPCA after eight ducklings were spotted near Byres Road, in the West End, on Monday.

Animal Rescue Officer Caitlin Houston managed to locate the tiny birds only to be called out again to the City Chambers and then to a neighbouring Glasgow City Council office to retrieve a further two ducklings.

Caitlin said: "After collecting the first eight ducklings I was called to George Square as another had been found in the City Chambers. As I was walking back to my van, a lady from the council offices stopped me to say that she had a duckling in her building too.

"The first eight I picked up are most likely siblings and I would assume the two from the city centre are too. They are very cute and I'm glad their adventures didn't end in them being hurt."

The ducklings are now recovering together at the SSPCA's National Wildlife Rescue Centre in Fishcross, Clackmannanshire.

Centre manager Colin Seddon said: "The ducklings are only weeks old so they're too young to be without their mothers. We think it's possible they flew off after becoming frightened as there was no sign of either of them.

"All of the ducklings are doing really well and we'll continue care for them until they're able to fend for themselves.

"We're hopeful we'll soon be able to release them back into the wild where they belong."

Anyone who discovers an injured or distressed animal is asked to call the Scottish SPCA's animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
