A RALLY has been held to demand more space for a West End primary school - despite pleas from some parents to call off the event.

The Space For Hillhead campaign group marched from the school to the City Chambers, where they handed over a petition to councillor Stephen Curran calling for a halt to a proposal to move the P7 class to the high school.

More than 200 parents and pupils from Hillhead Primary and Secondary, along with those from nearby Garnetbank Primary were involved, and councillors Martha Wardrop, Nina Baker, Kieran Wild, Ken Andrews and Kenny McLean also turned out to support parents.

The suggestion is part of proposals to ease the pressure on the over-crowded school.

Instead, primary parents want the adjacent Kelvin Park Early Years Centre (KPEYC) to be moved.

Hillhead Primary is over capacity and pupils are being taught in the school's library and ITC suite, as well as break out areas. There are not enough toilets for the number of youngsters in the school and no space for PE or playtimes.

However, Kelvin Park parents were upset the rally had gone ahead.

Mum Kate Cotter, who backs the Save KPEYC campaign, said: "The Space For Hillhead petition states in black and white that it supports dispersal of the EYC.

"I fully respect the rights of parents to express their dissatisfaction with the transitioning proposal but a lot of parents and children marching haven't fully appreciated that dispersal is just a polite word for closure.

"I trust the council will think carefully about the effect closure would have on more than 100 families and generations to come. Our youngest campaigner is one-week-old and attended his first political meeting this week with Mr Curran."

The consultation closes on Monday.
