SCHOOLCHILDREN, former pupils and politicians made it a special occasion when they helped celebrate a 40th anniversary.

Ex Scottish Labour leader Johann Lamont and Glasgow South West MP Ian Davidson joined former and current pupils for the special mass at St Conval's Church to commemorate the 40th anniversary of St Marnock's Primary School.

Afterwards, staff and pupils enjoyed lunch and treats as celebrations continued.

The school, in Pollok, has been recently refurbished as part of Glasgow City Council's £250million 4 Rs project to improve school and nurseries across the city.

It has been fitted with electric roller shutters, new ceilings, floors and windows.

All the school's toilets have been replaced, while the infant hall and main hall of the building have been completely revamped.

Last year, the school was the target of a deliberate fire which caused considerable damage to its front.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: "St Marnock's anniversary celebrations provided a great opportunity for everyone connected to the school to enjoy a special day in the history of the school.

"VIP guests and former pupils joined with staff and children to mark this significant milestone in the life of the school and to appreciate the recently renovated school building.

"We hope everyone had a memorable day and that staff and pupils are looking forward to making the most of their new learning environment."

Work on the multi-million pound 4R's project began last year with 59 schools and nurseries being refurbished.

The project is set to last for five years and more than 100 schools in the city have benefitted from the initiative.

As part of the project, new schools and nurseries are to be built, with work on the Rowena Nursery, next to Knightswood Primary School, set to start soon.
