CAMPAIGNERS against plans to introduce parking restrictions in streets near the new Southern General Hospital have handed in a petition to the City Chambers.

About 100 people marched to George Square to deliver four boxes containing objections from around 4000 local residents and businesses.

They are unhappy at city council plans to introduce residents parking permits and meters in a bid to control the overflow of vehicles from the new super hospital.

Councillor Alistair Watson, spokesman for sustainability and transport, met representatives of the objectors and said their views would be considered as part of the consultation exercise which is ongoing.

Campaign leader Alistair Sinclair said: "We had a great turnout given a lot of people were working and many in the area are elderly or disabled.

"It was marvellous to see everyone march across George Square with banners and whistles and shouting. George Square knew Govan had hit it.

"We will now wait to see what sort of response we get from the council. They have said they will come back to us once they have looked at all the objection."
