LIVE pictures from Glasgow are to be beamed around the world when the city welcomes 150 nations for the planet's biggest week of piping.

Performances from the World Pipe Band Championships and the Piping Live! Glasgow International Piping Festival are to be uploaded on to the internet, with organisers predicting "viewing parties" by stay-at-home enthusiasts from Christchurch in New Zealand to the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan.

Both events are expected to attract 50,000 spectators to Glasgow who will see 8000 pipers from 150 countries taking part in more than 200 performances, and organisers predict live streaming will attract a big worldwide audience.

The flag of each partcipating nation was today shown on the world's largest multi-touch video wall at Glasgow Caledonian University, while organisers told how they expect tickets to be snapped up in record time when the piping week is staged between August 11-17.

This year will celebrate the best in piping tradition and the most ground-breaking acts at locations across the city while "pop up performances" are to take place in Buchanan Street.

There will also be a series of events to highlight and focus on links between piping and the Great War in what is the centenary year of World War 1.

Highlights include award winners The Mischa Macpherson Trio appearing in The Gaels and Gracenotes concert, while the New Music Concert will showcase Calum MacCrimmon's Borraig suite of compositions.

Roddy MacLeod, festival director of Piping Live!, said: "Last year was our 10th birthday and such a blast but this year will be even better. The city will be buzzing after the Commonwealth Games and we want to keep the momentum going."

He added: "Whether you are looking to listen to piobaireachd, have a party or are parents looking for a fun day out with the kids - Piping Live! has it all. We are also proud to be part of Homecoming 2014 and our series of concerts and photo exhibition on the role of piping in WWI will be touching and insightful."
