FOR the past nine years it has been Glasgow – Scotland With Style.

However, Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, headed by chief executive Scott Taylor, is looking for a new brand slogan for Glasgow.

It needs to reflect the many elements that are going to give Glasgow international recognition – from life sciences to further education.

He said: "Glasgow – Scotland With Style has been a brilliant brand for the city and it has achieved a lot over the past nine years.

"But now we need something that is going to speak to the many areas of growth we now have in the city.

"If we're talking to agencies about bio-medical science or higher engineering then Glasgow – Scotland With Style is not quite as relevant.

"We need a new slogan that reflects everything Glasgow is and has to offer, which is going to be a huge challenge.

"And that's why we're appealing to the people of Glasgow to help us come up with a new city brand."

The branding Glasgow – Scotland With Style is used any time GCMB tries to attract trade to the city – from hotel chains and conferences to new flight routes.

In its nine-year history it has helped bring the Mobos to the city, the Uefa Cup Final in 2007, World International Gymnastics and the European Cheerleading Championships.

The slogan has also lured in conference business to the city – to the tune of £975million.

And GMCB is hoping to hit £1billion in conference business by July.

Last year, the Evening Times revealed how Glasgow won the title of Britain's conference capital for the sixth time, while the SECC was named Britain's best conference venue for the fourth time in five years.

And the campaign won Gold Award for the Best Brand Marketing Campaign at the leading Meetings Industry Association event.

Mr Taylor added: "Glasgow – Scotland With Style was very successful because it really defined what we knew about people who live in Glasgow – they have got style.

"It had a truth about it too – it spoke to the Glasgow Boys and that very distinct style Glasgow has with the heritage of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

"It also caused a bit of mischief in that other cities – and I'm not naming names – took great umbrage to Glasgow claiming itself to be the most stylish city in Scotland.

"Previously, that wasn't what we were known for."

Before Glasgow – Scotland With Style was introduced, the city was branded as Glasgow's Miles Better.

Launched in 1983, it was one of the most successful rebranding campaigns ever – and helped the city become European City of Culture.

In 2001, Glasgow was briefly transformed into the City of Love and we have also been Glasgow the Friendly City.

Now, Glasgow is looking forward to hosting the Turner Prize in 2015 and has been shortlisted for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.

But the biggest event to hit the city will be the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which Mr Taylor believes is too good a opportunity to pass up.

He added: "This is the biggest event Glasgow will see. We're going to have 1.26bn people seeing and reading about Glasgow and it's too good an opportunity not to make the most of it.

"We know that we have an incredibly creative city and we expect to get some really good ideas about what makes Glasgow the city it is. Nobody knows Glasgow like Evening Times readers and we're hoping for thousands of responses."

Marketing bosses need the new brand to cover areas as diverse as life sciences, financial and business services, low-carbon industries, engineering, manufacturing and design, higher and further education and tourism and major events.

The public consultation will run until Tuesday, May 21, with people invited to share their ideas at www.whatmakes glasgowgreat.co.uk or at www.facebook.com/Glasgow Scotlandwithstyle

There are suggestion boxes at more than 40 locations around the city, including libraries, museums, leisure centres, benefit offices and community halls and special postcards will be handed out for people to jot down their thoughts about Glasgow.
