HOUSE-BUILDING plots are going up for sale in Inverclyde as part of plans to curb the council area's falling population.

Eight self-build plots in Kilmacolm, described by the council as "one of Scotland's most sought after locations", are to be sold to people who want to create their own 'Grand Designs'.

As first revealed in yesterday's Evening Times, the move is part of a £1 million plan to encourage more people to settle in Inverclyde, the local authority - which also covers Greenock, Port Glasgow and Gourock - is also offering a two-year council tax discount to those who relocate there.

A council spokesman said prices for the eight plots have not yet been set.

Although the plots come with an agreement that a house may be built there, the design specifics of each property and materials to be used must be agreed as part of the planning process.

And as well as a council tax discount of up to £1000 over two years, those moving to the area for the first time will be given a relocation officer to help them find a home and access local services.

The population of Inverclyde, which has been falling for 20 years, is estimated at around 81,000.

According to the council, the population fell by 18% between 1981 and 2001, and projections estimate that by 2033 it will have dropped to 66,611.

This is a higher projected percentage fall than for any local authority in Scotland.

A council spokesman said: "In addition to releasing self-build plots, the council is offering a range of incentives to new residents into the area.

"The council is also investing additional support for businesses, development and graduates as part of the Inverclyde Living scheme."

Those who would like to register their interest and request an initial enquiry form for the Kilmacolm self-build plots are asked to email their contact details to living@inverclyde.gov.uk
