Kayleigh Scott fell from the building in Fullerton Street, in Ayr town centre, shortly after 11.30pm on Wednesday, as reported in later editions of yesterday's Evening Times.

The teenager, from Tarbolton, was rushed to Ayr Hospital but died a short time later.

Her family laid a solitary bunch of flowers at the scene with a card that said: "Loved and missed forever. Sleep safe our precious little angel, all our love, hugs and kisses. Mum, dad, Jodie and little Rubi."

The circumstances surrounding her death are unclear and the street where the incident took place, opposite the town's bus station, remained cordoned off.

A police spokeswoman said: "An investigation is under way."

Kayleigh was a pupil at Belmont Academy, Ayr, and Alan Moir, the school's head teacher, said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this difficult time.

"Due to the summer holidays, it is not possible to bring everyone together, as we would normally do in such tragic circumstances.

"However, we are doing everything we can to contact friends from the school to offer them support, someone to talk to or a shoulder to cry on."

Friends of Kayleigh left tributes to her on internet social networking sites Facebook and Twitter.

Deklyn Thompson wrote: "Young deaths are such a horrible thing, no one deserves to die young. RIP Kayleigh. Thoughts go out to your family."

Steff Houston wrote: "Love you so much, just feels like yesterday we were having a great laugh, just feels like a dream – waiting on myself waking up."
