LICENSING officers are investigating a Glasgow nightclub over claims it has a two-way mirror in the women's toilets.

The Shimmy Club, in Royal Exchange Square, was reported to have installed the 'mirror' – similar to those used by police interviewing suspects – between the toilets and a function room that was rented to private parties for £800.

Clubbers reported that there was no sign in the toilets, or anywhere else on the premises, alerting female revellers they can be seen.

The recently-opened nightclub is owned by Stefan King's G1 Group.

A spokesman for Glasgow Licensing Board said: "Complaints have been received about these premises and licensing standards officers are investigating."

Police alsosaid theywere investigating after receiving a complaint.

Glasgow MSP Drew Smith said he was concerned about the set up. Mr Smith has written to city council chief executive George Black to ask if licensing provisions are being broken.

He has also expressed his concerns to Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill.

Mr Smith said: "I think most of us find the concept of a voyeur toilet disturbing.

"I would urge the management of this club to board it up and show their customers some respect. Women using a washroom should not have to worry about whether they are part of some kind of bizarre peep show."

No-one from the G1 Group responded to our repeated requests for a comment. However, a post on the club's Facebook page stated: "There has always been signage in the toilets but as a result of media feedback clearer signage has been put in place."

"We are committed to listening to you guys who are our core customer base. So if your feedback is that you want the mirror area to change then we will listen."
