Alan Whitelaw, 39, was found dead in his tenth floor flat on Glenfinnan Road, Maryhill, shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

As reported in later editions of last night's Evening Times, police say he suffered a "brutal and sustained violent attack".

Residents who live near the scene spoke of their shock.

One resident in a nearby block, who did not want to be named, said: "There were people arguing but I hear things out there all the time so I didn't even go to my window. It's such a shame for the man and his family. My heart goes out to them."

A neighbour said: "There are always rammies here, shouting and bawling, that sort of thing.

"I didn't hear anything last night. I got up this morning and the police had the area cordoned off."

Another neighbour added: "I didn't hear anything until the police arrived. There were lots of car doors opening and shutting.

"It's tragic and it will be a real shock to the community. People say it's bad here but it's the same as every other area. We had the police up last week."

Police had the block cordoned off yesterday and officers kept watch as forensic teams came and went.

Detective Inspector Fil Capaldi said: "I have no doubt someone in the block of flats would have heard the disturbance take place and more than likely saw someone leave either the floor or the flats in a hurry, possibly dishevelled or with blood on them.

"From our investigations so far, we know that there was a disturbance outside Mr Whitelaw's flat between 6pm and 7pm.

"Whether this had progressed into his flat or whether a further attack took place later in the evening, has still to be established."

Officers have appealed for witnesses to come forward with information by calling 101.
