THE approach of Armed Forces Day will be marked by a flag-raising cere-mony on Monday at the City Chambers.

Lord Provost Sadie Docherty, who will lead the celebrations, will witness the raising of the specially commissioned Armed Forces Day flag in what is now an annual event to mark Armed Forces Day next Saturday, June 29.

She will be joined by Lieutenant Colonel Andy Bruce, Commander Andrew Cowan and Squadron Leader Archie McCallum – representing the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force respectively – as well as councillors and officials.

Flag raising ceremonies will be held at the same time in towns and cities across Britain ahead of Armed Forces Day.

Mrs Docherty said: "It is important veterans and our serving and future military personnel know Glasgow and Britain supports them.

"We owe them a huge debt for the freedom and democracy we enjoy.

"I look forward to Armed Forces Day and the opportunity to meet veterans and serving mili- tary at our celebration in George Square.

"Next year marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War and this city will lead a national event to mark the date.

"This will include a special service at Glasgow Cathedral."

Armed Forces Day will involve a parade in George Square led by the Royal Marine Band Scotland followed by serving Royal Navy, Army and RAF personnel as well as cadets from all three services and veterans.

There will also be a fly-past by a pair of typhoon jets as well as entertainment from That Swing Sensation and the Kennedy Cupcakes.

Other attractions include the Glasgow motorcycle team the Speedway Tigers, the Cumbrian Pipe Band, vintage jeeps and a Jackal Carrier light patrol vehicle.

There will also be a climbing wall and an inflatable assault course, stands and stalls.
