SCHOOL students and residents have created the art which will decorate three new community health centres.

The work will appear in NHS Lanarkshire's three new facilities in East Kilbride, Wishaw and Kilsyth.

The centres, which are currently under construction, are expected to open later this year.

Pupils from Heathery Knowe Primary in East Kilbride, Coltness High School in Wishaw, and Kilsyth Academy have all taken part in the art project as well as people from community groups such as Pather Arts Group and the Kilsyth Community Forum.

The art will take the form of stained glass windows and murals on walls as well as the chair fabric in waiting areas and there will be sculptures.

It will all be featured in spaces open to the public such as waiting areas.

Graham Johnston, head of NHS Lanarkshire's management services said: "Almost 30 events have taken place across the three towns involving around 300 individuals.

"Our objective is that the final artwork which will feature in the centres will be influenced and shaped by these engagement events."

One artist plans to feature some work she undertook with a primary school while another's will be influenced by the comments he received from meeting local people.

Mr Johnston added: "It gives the local community a stake in each building's development and helps to deliver public art which will complement each building, promote health and wellbeing and enhance the public space for the benefit of patients, staff and the wider community."
