Public asked to step out to help Ayesha

FAMILIES are being asked to join a walk in aid of a schoolgirl with leukemia.

The five kilometre event will be held in Pollok Park, Glasgow, on Sunday, June 10.

Money raised will go to the Anthony Nolan charity, which is hunting for the bone marrow transplant needed by seven-year-old Ayesha Siddiqui.

As first reported in the Evening Times in February, Ayesha, from Newton Mearns, East Renfrew-shire, has been having chemotherapy at Yorkhill Hospital For Sick Children.

None of her family, including her four-year-old brother Saif, is a match.

Although a million people have been tested, no match has been found. Because of Ayesha's background, it is most likely to come from somebody with an ethnic group.

Her dad, Nadeem, 50, a cancer doctor, who treats women's cancers at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, said: "As the charity needs money to grow the register of donors, a series of fundraising events have been held and the next planned is the 5K walk.

"We are asking family, friends and the public to join in because their donation will make a lifesaving difference to our family, and all families like ours who are still waiting to find a matching transplant donor."

Registration for the event costs £5.

Meanwhile, a drive to get people to sign up to the Anthony Nolan register is being held at a city festival.

Those attending the Glasgow Mela will be asked to join the register, and a team from Strathclyde Fire and Rescue will be helping recruit volunteers on June 23 and 24 in Kelvingrove Park.

Ayesha's appeal has already been backed by Glasgow actors and TV presenters Sanjeev and Hardeep Singh Kohli, who have urged as many people as possible to get tested and join the register.

They have pleaded for members of Glasgow's mixed-race communities to join.

Hardeep, 43, said: "We need only one donor for Ayesha, but we are going to have go through hundreds to find that match.

"That's why as many people from ethnic backgrounds as possible need to step up and donate.

"After all, you could save someone's life."
