A PUBLIC consultation will be held this week to look at an area of contaminated land.

It is being held over the regeneration of Stane Gardens in Shotts, Lanarkshire.

The open space was fenced off after contamination was found by North Lanarkshire Council in February 2011.

This was linked to Shotts Iron Works and the Crowley Russell and Co Ltd Tar Factory once being near the site.

The land is in the process of being cleared of all contaminants.

North Lanarkshire Council and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency are hosting the consultation on Thursday at the town's fire station in Shottskirk Road.

Residents can call in any time between 2-8pm to find out more about the plans for the area and give their views.

Officers from the council and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency will explain the planned clean-up work.

Information panels will show visitors more details of the regeneration and there will also be a survey on how the area can be best developed over time to meet the needs of the town.

The council will publish details of the feedback it receives.

It has agreed to remove some of the most contaminated soil from the site, before placing a lining material over the whole area and covering it with soil and planting seeds to reinstate grass and make the site safe.

It also plans to make it a park by restoring the South Calder Water above ground to create a river running through Stane Gardens. This will be landscaped and include paths.
