THE Clydeside will turn purple this weekend as hundreds of people show their support for a new fundraiser.

Hundreds of people are expected to take part in the Bridges Walk tomorrow which aims to raise funds to help find a cure for kidney disease.

The seven-mile walk, organised by Kidney Research UK, takes in some of the city's most famous bridges and is now in its second year.

Miss Glasgow Sammy Bryceland will add a touch of glamour by donning the charity's signature purple and joinig hundreds of kidney patients, families and supporters.

The walk gets under way at the Riverside Museum at 11am tomorrow.

Registration is now closed, but fundraisers can still turn up and register on the day.

The charity is hoping to raise around £40,000 for research into kidney disease, which does not have a cure.

The number of patients with kidney failure in the UK is rising by 4% every year.

Almost 700 people in Glasgow and the surrounding areas are either on dialysis or are receiving followon care after having a kidney transplant.

Money raised by the Bridges Walk will help fund research projects across the UK, including four in Scotland.

Sandra Currie, Chief Executive of Kidney Research UK, said: "I took part in our very first Glasgow Bridges Walk last year and it was a wonderful.

"People can take small steps to improve their health, and walking is a great way to do this. The walk is seven miles, and you can go at your own pace. It's also a great way to get the whole family involved in fitness."

Registration costs £10 for adults and £4 for children. Last year's event raised around £26,000 for the charity.
