RAIL passengers were hit with travel misery following delays on busy services.

There were difficulties for people travelling in the west of Scotland yesterday due to overhead wire problems between Kilpatrick and Dalmuir.

This led to disruption to journeys between Helensburgh/Balloch and Glasgow Queen Street.

An overhead wire problem at Dunbar meant rush-hour disruption for those travelling with the CrossCountry, East Coast and ScotRail train companies.

CrossCountry services travelling towards Edinburgh were terminating at Newcastle. A limited replacement bus service was operating between Newcastle and Edinburgh.

An amended service was in operation between Edinburgh and Glasgow Central/Dundee/Aberdeen.

East Coast had a reduced service running from Edinburgh towards Newcastle, but with possible delays.

No trains were running into Edinburgh and services from London terminated at either Newcastle or Berwick-upon-Tweed.

A limited replacement bus service was operating between Newcastle and Edinburgh.

It came after passengers travelling before Christmas were hit with disruption.

On December 24 services between Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh were hit with delays after a fault at Croy.

Disruption hit last-minute Christmas shoppers and rushhour commuters.

Scotrail said trains between Glasgow, Dunblane and Stirling were also affected.

Meanwhile, Network Rail chief executive Mark Carne said he would not be taking a bonus this year.

The rail boss had been under fire since late-running Christmas engineering work led to the closure of King's Cross station in London last Saturday amid chaotic scenes.

Mr Carne could have received as much as £135,000 in a performance-related annual pay bonus for 2014/15.
