RECORD numbers of movie fans are being predicted for Glasgow's 10th anniversary Film Festival.

The birthday celebrations will begin next year at the Glasgow Film Theatre on February 20, ahead of the arrival of the predicted 39,000 movie buffs.

The festival has grown dramatically, and last year supported 368 events, making Glasgow the home of the UK's third largest film festival.

There are plenty highlights for 2014, including;

l1939: Hooray For Hollywood! All the Best Picture Oscar nominees from Hollywood's Greatest Year.

Alison Garner has worked with the festival organisers since its opening, and became a co-director in 2007 alongside Allan Hunter.

She said: "We were taken by surprise by the huge numbers that have turned out over the years, We couldn't have imagined it when we started.

"Glaswegians don't hold back on telling us what they like, and what they don't like. Our aim is to please the audience. Though I do tend to blame Alan and say he picked the film if people don't like it."

Last year's most popular premiere was The Place Beyond The Pines, starring Ryan Gosling. Previous years have seen the UK premieres of cult favourites In The Loop and Lars and the Real Girl.

Sunshine on Leith director Dexter Fletcher was a visitor to the Glasgow Film Festival in 2012, for the screening of his debut film as a director, Wild Bill.

In praising the 47-year-old film maker, Alison said: "He was here for Wild Bill, which is a very different film from Sunshine on Leith. To see his progression is great and we have great connections with him at the Glasgow Film Festival."

Tickets for the 2014 festival are available to book from January 24. The event runs until March 2.
