But yesterday George Square finally re-opened to the public.
And the unveiling could not have come on a better day as early autumn sun blazed down on the new look space.
The red surface has been lifted and replaced with hard-wearing resin and the grass beds are back.
The Evening Times visited the Square to find out what you think of its facelift.
JACK WILLIAMSON, 25, coffee shop worker, Dennistoun
"It is really nice here in George Square now.
"I don't think all that much has changed - I had thought the changes would have been much more dramatic."
LEWIS CLARK, 25, student, Dennistoun
"I've just come back from Taiwan and they have plenty of public space there outside their city hall where people can come out and enjoy their city. It looks like that here now. I like it."
JIM KINNING, 47, panel beater, Johnstone
"It looks bigger and more spacious now it's been tidied up. They could have done something a bit dramatic with it. People who visit all the time won't see many changes."
SANDRA BOYLE, 48, sign language teacher, Merchant City,
"I like seeing the grass back and it's great to already see kids playing and making the most of it.
"I always enjoy sitting in the Square. I come here a lot and it looks really good."
CREE BELL, 21, sales assistant,
"I was expecting to see something totally different - something you could look at and go 'wow'. It's not got the wow factor, though it does look fresher. I'm disappointed."
SOPHIE GIBSON, 23, graduate, Duke Street "In Stirling, where I used to live, they've done the giant horses heads and people love them, but that wouldn't be right here.
"The square has to fit its historical surroundings and this works well."
