London Road is now open to traffic after the problem building was demolished, last month.

As reported in the Evening Times, 590-598 London Road and 2-8 Landressy Street were brought down using a "controlled demolition" by Glasgow City Council.

The work began on Tuesday May 22.

Residents were evacuated on January 13 after large cracks appeared in the walls and the tenement block, near Bridgeton Cross, was found to have moved.

These families have since been unable to return to their homes, other than to collect belongings.

The opening of the road marks the end of a long saga for local residents and businesses.

In February the Evening Times revealed that local shops, bars and hairdressers were suffering financially and many had been forced to shut early after passing trade was reduced by the road closure.

Marie Granger, 44, a beauty therapist at AM Hair and Beauty in London Road, said the last few months had been a "nightmare".

She said: "It is great that is it is back open, you can hear the traffic going by.

"It is still a bit quieter than usual, because probably a lot of people don't know that it is open yet, but I think it will build up over the next few days."

Bridgeton SNP MSP John Mason welcomed the reopening of the road.

He said: "It is five months since it happened, which is a ridiculously long length of time.

"I just find it totally unacceptable that it should take so long for a major road in Glasgow to reopen. I think the council needs to take stock from this and look at considerably speeding up its procedures."

Landressy Street remains closed to traffic temporarily while site clearance work is ongoing, but there is pedestrian access to the road.

A spokesman from Glasgow City Council said: "This work was necessary as the buildings at this location were in a dangerous condition."
