Council chiefs in Renfrewshire have announced a multi-million road improvement scheme for the coming year which will benefit drivers as well as pedestrians.

The council is to spend £3.8million on improvements for the financial year beginning next month. The cash injection is being invested to prolong the local network of almost 500 miles of urban and rural roads.

Almost half the money - £1.7m in total - is being used to completely resurface roads in most need of repair and which cannot be patched up by more cost effective means.

Highway officials have drawn-up a list of 41 roads - both residential and main routes - which includes sections of the busy A8 in Bishopton and the main A roads through Erskine and Bridge of Weir.

The footway resurfacing will take place at 27 locations, including Paisley's Hawkhead Road, and parts of Johnstone and Renfrew town centres.

The rest of the investment will be used to treat rural and residential roads which will include filling in potholes and tackling crumbling stretches.

However, £300,000 will also be used to repair and resurface footpath while another £100,000 is being set aside for drainage improvements.

Senior councillor Eddie Devine said: "The council sees investment in the area's roads as a priority. With more than 800km of local roads to maintain, we obviously can't be everywhere at once, which is why have to prioritise areas for investment according to need."
