Glasgow City Council had hoped to start upgrading Kilmarnock Road, in Shawlands, last week.

Now construction work is not expected to start until the end of the month.

However, council bosses today vowed the completion date will not change - if everything goes as planned.

Letters will now be sent out to residents and businesses, informing them of the delay.

Local motorists hit out last month at plans to ban parking on the street for 15 weeks.

The hitch means temporary parking restrictions on Kilmarnock Road, will not be in place until the end of the month.

As previously reported by the Evening Times, residents and workers say parking in Shawlands is limited and are critical of the parking ban.

A section of pavement, between Walton Street and Mount Stuart Street, will be broadened by two metres and laid with a new granite surface and new street lighting.

The road between Milwood Street and Skirving Street will also be resurfaced.

It is the first phase of public realm improvements by the city council on Kilmarnock Road.

A Glasgow City Council spokesman, said: "The contractor has undertaken to start work towards the end of the month.

"A letter drop will be carried out next week to let residents and businesses know the intended start date and remind them of the temporary parking controls.

"Weather permitting, the work is scheduled to be completed in mid-April."

Council bosses recently came under fire for increasing the price of parking for an hour on Kilmarnock Road by 300%.

Since December 6, drivers have had to pay 80p for an hour of parking instead of the previous 20p for an hour.

Local business owners and shop keepers launched a petition calling on the local authority to reverse the increase.
