The death of his Boyzone pal Stephen Gately was always going to overshadow the latest solo gigs of the band’s frontman Ronan Keating.

And he chose last night at the Clyde Auditorium to pay tribute to the singer who suddenly died last summer by singing In This Life, the song he performed at his funeral last October.

Ronan said: “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to deal with. The only way I could honour him is with song.”

He just about managed to lift the mood after that, running though his solo songs, a mix of arm-waving tunes such as This is Your Song, covers including Simon and Garfunkel’s Homeward Bound.

But it was the biggest hits everybody was waiting for, Life is a Rollercoaster, Lovin’ Each Day and When You Say Nothing At All, and he performed them brilliantly.

One tip though Ronan – there was a bit too much of getting the audience to sing. We’re there to hear you!

  • Ronan returns tonight and Saturday, 7.30pm, Clyde Auditorium.
