A Renfrew teenager has become the latest recruit to join an apprenticeship scheme with Virgin Media.

The company wants to find 300 youngsters to join its scheme and so far more than 1000 Scots have applied.

Ross Kincaid, 18, was one of the lucky people to make the grade.

After finishing his Highers he looked at several apprenticeship options before finding the Virgin Media scheme on the company's website.

Following completion of his training, he'll enter a six-month probationary period as a field technician, at which point he'll be fully qualified.

Ross said: "It's the fast-pace of the scheme and the end-goal of a secure full-time position that most attracted me to the position.

"Each Virgin Media trainee is given their own van, their own set of tools and their own independence to learn on the job under guidance.

"Virgin Media propels its trainees into employment and encourages fast progression through the apprenticeship. Many of the apprentices get the opportunity to sit their cable technician exams far ahead of other similar trainee programs."

Virgin Media first rolled out its apprenticeship scheme three years ago, providing young people with the chance to earn while they learn.

So far the company has helped more than 90 apprentices to reach their potential, giving them extensive training in a variety of disciplines.

The new field technician apprentices work towards the company's own, nationally recognised QCF Level 2 (equivalent to NVQ Level 2) in Communication Technology.

After the success of the previous recruitment drive, Virgin Media anticipates the new scheme will find even more stars of the future.

Around 10 million people receive home entertainment services from the firm and new recruits have plenty of opportunities to progress.
