MORE than 500 men have pledged to take part in the Men's 10K in Glasgow, just days after registration opened.

The 6.2-mile race, which is Scotland's only mass participation event dedicated to men, will take place on June 15 and promises to be the biggest yet.

Organisers are hoping record numbers will lace up their trainers to help warm up the city for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which will get under way a month later.

For the first time ever, Glasgow will play host to The Men's 10K Festival, organised by Men's Health Forum Scotland, with a host of events for all the family.

The festival will take place on Father's Day weekend, June 14-15, at Bellahouston Park and will include a family 3K and men's 5K on the Saturday as well as a Grub and Giggle pre-event.

On Sunday there will be a 1K Rascal Run for little ones, which aims to raise cash for Yorkhill Children's Charity, before the main event gets under way.

More than 3100 men took part in last year's race, with more than 500 boys and girls pulling on their trainers for the inaugural Rascal Run.

Organisers have faced a battle to secure sponsorship and funding for this year's event, with more still required to ensure the event is as expansive as planned.

The Men's 10K receives no financial backing from the Scottish Government or Local Authorities.

Sarah McMillan, 10K for Men Event Manager, said: "We're delighted to confirm that the ninth annual Men's 10K will take place on June 15.

"And this year it will be even bigger and better than ever, with a host of extra special events for all the family during The Men's 10K Festival.

"Sunday will be the same as last year with the Rascal Run in association with Yorkhill Children's Charity (1K) and the Men's 10K.

"However, this year we've added a new kids' 3K (the Family 3) and a new Men's 5K on the Saturday afternoon."

The race is part of a packed programme of running events in Glasgow, which also includes a women's 10K race and Great Scottish Run.
