TRANSPORT bosses today vowed passenger safety is their "No.1 priority" after a young girl was raped on a Glasgow bus.

Police are hunting two men who attacked the 14-year-old on the upper deck of a No.57 bus.

The attack happened near Silverburn shopping mall in Pollok, on the South Side.

In a move to reassure customers, a spokesman for First Glasgow, said: "The safety and security of our staff and passengers is our No.1 priority.

"We will continue to do everything we can to help the police apprehend the perpetrators.

"We would echo the police appeal for anyone who may have information about the incident to come forward."

Police said two 14-year-old girls boarded the bus at the Silverburn depot at about 10.30pm last Friday, March 22 and took a seat downstairs.

However, one of the girls then went upstairs where she began talking to two men.

She was assaulted then raped by the pair.

Police said the victim's friend then went upstairs before raising the alarm amongst some of the other passengers.

Other passengers – two men and a woman – then rushed to girl's aid and the girls then left the bus two stops from Silverburn and went home on another bus.

Detective Constable Jackie Carroll of Greater Glasgow CID, appealed for the three passengers who helped the girl to come forward.

She said "They will have vital information which could help with our investigation.

"The men responsible boarded the bus in the city centre - they were loud and made crude com- ments to passengers.

"The driver ejected the two men at Pollokshaws Road, near Shawlands Cross at around 12.30am.

"I would like to speak to anyone who was on the bus at the time."

The attackers are aged between 18 and 20. One had a shaved head and was around 5ft 10in tall. The other had brown spiky hair.

Anyone with information should call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
