SANTA'S reindeer made a flying visit to Glasgow to launch one of the highlights of the festive season.

Glasgow on Ice will open next month and tickets are now on sale for what is one of the largest open-air ice rinks in Europe.

This year, Santa will have a workshop in George Square and there will be a chance to meet his reindeer, pet them and pose for pictures on his sleigh.

First to try it out was city council leader Gordon Matheson, who was joined by eight-year-old Erin McAllister from Crookston.

As well as the ice rink and Christmas lights, George Square will also host free entertainment, themed nights on the ice and funfair rides.

Mr Matheson said: "Christmas offers the opportunity to see the city at its best.

"It is bustling with excitement thanks to attractions and events, from meeting Santa's reindeer to skating, shopping, food and drink and family entertainment.

"If you are looking for a way to get into the festive spirit, I can think of nothing better than skating under the twinkling lights in George Square or taking in the sights from the big wheel overlooking the city. Christmas in Glasgow is not to be missed."

Glasgow on Ice will open to the public at noon on Thursday November 2 and will be open every day until Hogmanay, with the exception of Christmas Day.

As well as the big wheel, visitors will be able to enjoy an Alpine Bar or an alfresco Christmas bar.

Last year, around 50,000 donned skating boots and this year Student Magic Mondays will allow anyone studying onto the ice for half price.

There will again be sessions for toddlers to seven-year-olds, where they can use specially designed safety skates.

And there will be skating sessions exclusively for wheelchair users and the visually impaired.
