COUNCIL bosses have pulled items from school meals after a catering supplier found horse DNA in lasagne produced for another customer.

Renfrewshire Council confirmed it was withdrawing some products made by the Brakes Group after its subsidiary Creative Foods found equine DNA in a test of frozen beef mince, which it had obtained from Pinnacle Foods.

The Kent-based firm said further tests on its lasagne had not found any more traces of horsemeat.

However, the Renfrewshire Council said it took the decision in response to public concern.

It stated: "There has been a lot in the media about horsemeat getting into the food chain ... We are doing all we can to ensure this doesn't happen in Renfrewshire.

"One of our suppliers, the Brakes Group, has found horse DNA in lasagne produced for another customer. An investigation is under way.

"No horse DNA has been found in any of the Brakes Group products supplied to Renfrewshire Council.

"While there is no risk to human health, we have removed some Brakes Group products from our catering premises as a precaution."
