A PRIMARY school decimated during an afternoon blaze is to be knocked down.

Around 35 fire fighters rushed to St Dominic's primary in Airdrie yesterday after reports of a fire sweeping through the school

Dozens of school children were evacuated shortly after the blaze broke out around 4pm, and local residents were also removed form their nearby homes.

Now the local authority have announced the building is to be demolished as the damage caused is 'beyond repair'.

Pupils are not attending school today and arrangements for the next few months are to be announced later.

North Lanarkshire Council confirmed there is no school next week.

A spokesman for North Lanarkshire Council said: “There will be no education provision for pupils of St Dominic’s Primary School next week.

“Work has begun today to demolish the building and we are currently assessing the education options available when schools resume after the Easter Holidays.

“Parents will be contacted directly early next week to advise them of arrangements.”
