MORE than 280 Glasgow pupils were kept out of school after support assistants staged a second strike.

Five Complex Learning Needs (CLN) schools in the north-east of the city, including Ashcraig, Broomlea and Milton, were closed yesterday, leaving 245 pupils at home.

Nearly 40 pupils at other schools, including Aultmore Park Autism Unit and Eastmuir Primary, were also unable to attend as the row about staff taking on extra medical and healthcare duties deepened.

As reported in last Friday's Evening Times, union Unison is arguing that workers are not being properly trained or paid enough to perform tasks such as administering medicine or other healthcare duties.

Around 1000 pupils were affected in the strike last week which closed 10 schools and disrupted several others.

Workers demonstrated outside the education offices in the City Chambers yesterday afternoon.

Carol Ball, education convener for the Glasgow City Branch of Unison, said further strikes in other parts of Glasgow would be planned if the council did not take on board their concerns.

Councillor Stephen Curran, executive member for education and young people, said the council has been listening to staff.
