The 27-year-old midfielder, who also plays for Manchester United, has accepted medical advice to take an "extended break" in the hope his illness – inflammatory bowel condition ulcerative colitis – will improve.

A statement from Manchester United said Fletcher, from Dalkeith in Midlothian, was taking a rest "to afford the best chance possible of achieving full remission once again".
