Scots ‘no longer openly hostile to Tories’

David Mundell, the new Under Secretary of State for Scotland, yesterday became the first Conservative minister in 14 years to visit Glasgow on Government business and claimed the city is no longer “openly hostile” to the Tories.

Mundell, who is his party’s sole MP north of the border, claimed during a tour of Labour heartlands in the east end of Glasgow that the city needed a voice at the UK’s “top table” .

His tour included the massive Clyde Gateway regeneration area, Kibble education centre in Paisley and a Jobcentre Plus in Clydebank. He then met Glasgow council leader Gordon Matheson, where high-speed rail links to Scotland, devolution of some benefits legislation and MoD shipbuilding contracts on the Clyde were discussed. The Scotland Office minister becomes the first Tory in Government to visit Glasgow since Michael Forsyth in 1996, outside campaigning for the 1997 General Election, and the first since the birth of the Scottish Parliament in 1999.
