A man has been attacked in broad daylight prompting a 999 response in East Kilbride. 

Police say they were called to High Common Road area of East Kilbride following reports of an incident at around 12.55pm.

An ambulance has been pictured at the scene and no details have been provided on the status of the man who was attacked. 

Our reporter has been told locally that the man was stabbed. It is understood that the victim had been arguing with others at a nearby Tesco supermarket and had ran away. It is claimed his attackers caught up with him and then struck near the school. This has not been confirmed by the force. 

One local said: "A man was stabbed near the school, how can anyone do that in the middle of the day. It makes you sick."

Another added: "The guys had started fighting at Tesco and the guy ran away. They got him near the school and attacked him. It wasn't anything to do with actual school."

The disturbance took place near Calderglen High School, but it is understood that the school has no link to the incident. 

The force confirmed that enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 12.55pm on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, police were called to the High Common Road area of East Kilbride, following the reported assault of a man.

"Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.”

A spokesperson for South Lanarkshire Council said: "We have been made aware of an incident some distance away from the school. No pupils were involved." 

The Scottish Ambulance Service have been contacted for comment.
