RESIDENTS in the East End are celebrating after train bosses said they will get a Sunday service.

From December 14, trains will run through the electrified Whifflet line and stop at Mount Vernon and Carmyle every Sunday.

Councillor Anne Simpson said the service will "transform" the lives of those living in the area.

She said: "People were moving away from the area because they did not have services on Sundays and they couldn't go anywhere, but now they can.

"If you've not got a Sunday service at all it's difficult here to do anything.

"They've electrified the line and are going to be stopping at Mount Vernon and Carmyle, and that's a big thing for us here."

Anne has been campaigning to start the train service since she was elected more than two years ago.

She said: "We are stuck out where services are quite important, and I'm delighted and I know other people are.

"It will make such a difference, we're all overjoyed."

The new service will run every hour from Whifflet through Mount Vernon and Carmyle, as well as Bargeddie, Kirkwood and Baillieston, terminating at Glasgow Central.

Coatbridge resident Janette Stewart said the new service would be a great help. The retired teacher said: "For those of us who don't drive it is a frustration to not have a train service on a Sunday.

"This will really help broaden the horizons of those who have been stuck at home and let them get out to visit friends or go shopping in the city.

"Personally, I'm looking forward to being able to travel into the art galleries and bookshops on a Sunday.

"We've waited a long time for this service - it's great news."

The transport victory is the second for the area, after residents managed to save their number 64 bus service from the axe last July.

First Bus bosses did a u-turn on plans to stop the service after councillors and residents teamed up to campaign to save it.

The new rail timetable is part of a series of changes to be implemented by ScotRail from mid-December.

The rail giants will introduce two trains an hour between Whifflet and Milngavie and two between Dalmuir and Whifflet on Mondays to Saturdays.

Two services will also be running from Glasgow to Motherwell per hour, where there had previously been only one.

A spokeswoman for ScotRail said: "By adding new services and stops, the new timetable is designed to make travel easier and more convenient for the vast majority of our customers.

"We will be distributing commuter information showing the new peak-time trains on each route and have more staff on the ground to highlight the changes."
