THE majority of pensioners in the Glasgow area as well as other people with medical problems have so far snubbed the offer of a free flu jab this winter.

Shock new figures reveal that more than half of those who qualify for the vaccination at GP surgeries in Greater Glasgow have ignored a countrywide anti-flu campaign which was launched nine weeks ago and which targeted the elderly and those with underlying health conditions.

Scotland's Chief Medical Officer Sir Harry Burns today urged them to come forward and arrange a flu jab especially those who suffer from asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, MS and other heart, lung and liver problems as well as those with lowered immunity.

They along, with pregnant women, can be hit the hardest if struck down with flu which can trigger more serious complications.

Sir Harry said: "Flu strikes suddenly and it's important to be prepared. The flu vaccine only takes a few minutes, but will offer protection for around 12 months."
