A CALL for more CCTV cameras to be installed in a busy town centre has been made after a woman was involved in an abduction bid.

The terrifying ordeal happened in Houston Square, Johnstone, Renfrewshire after the woman collapsed.

A man, who claimed to those who had gathered that he was her friend, then tried to abduct her.

The man fled when police arrived on the scene but the victim has since contacted her local councillor Andy Doig to demand action.

Councillor Doig said: "Crucial evidence as to his identity was not available as there are apparently only two CCTV cameras in the square."

The councillor has written to the police superintendent for Renfrewshire, Alan Speirs, calling on the force to put pressure on Renfrewshire Council to release £1.5million to increase CCTV coverage in Houston Square.

Councillor Doig added: "I have written to Mr Speirs informing him of my concern regarding the lack of CCTV cameras and pointing out that the previous SNP council administration ring-fenced £1.5m for more CCTV cameras in all the three town centres in Renfrewshire: Paisley, Renfrew and Johnstone.

"I would like him to put pressure on the new administration to act on this issue so that people can walk the streets in safety.

"My aim is to build not only a more prosperous Johnstone but a safer Johnstone too."

In response, the police chief said: "My officers and I work in very close liaison with Renfrewshire Council to provide a safe environment for local residents and visitors to Johnstone and indeed the wider area of Renfrewshire.

"Extra police patrols are routinely deployed during weekends and evenings and other key times of the year in town centres to offer public reassurance.

"However the installation of CCTV in any area of public space is the responsibility of the local authority."

A spokesman for the council said: "Work is well under way to use the already agreed investment in CCTV.

"There will be additional cameras, increased use of mobile CCTV cameras, and better digital connectivity between CCTV systems."
