ANY fears about spiders will need to be forgotten if a giant arachnid gets the popular vote.

The outsize spider is in competition with a giant nest to win pride of place at an adventure playground.

Forestry Commission Scotland is turning a former dumping ground at Cuningar Loop, opposite the Athletes' Village, in Glasgow's East End, into an urban forest at a cost of almost £6million.

The visitor attraction on the banks of the Clyde will feature an activity zone and a network of trails running around the site, which is the size of 15 football pitches.

Joneen Clarke, Forestry Commission Scotland project manager for Cuningar Loop, said: "We are presenting the design plans to give people a chance to see what we are proposing and also to have their say.

"For the adventure play feature we have two mocked up models - the giant nest and giant spider web.

"We will be choosing one design so it is a great opportunity for people to give their input and we will progress with the most popular design."

The park will also feature a bike skills park that can be used by all abilities.

Ms Clarke said: "We have concept designs for four tracks to be used. This will include a balance track, beginners track, improvers track and pump track for advanced cyclists.

"Cycling Scotland is working with us in an advisory capacity and throughout the build we will invite along local bike clubs to get them involved in the design and construction, making sure the tracks are spot on."

The designs are featured in our pictures and the public must respond before September 19.
