The incredible career of stage and TV legend Johnny Beattie will be celebrated at a special gala night.

The event, Johnny Beattie – A Diamond Celebration, will take place at Glasgow's Citizens' Theatre, where a glittering line up of Scots talent will perform or regale the audience with stories about the Glasgow-born entertainer who has achieved a remarkable 50 years in showbiz.

Hollywood star Alan Cumming will appear, alongside Johnny's River City partner Elieen McCallum.

Comedians Andy Cameron and Dean Park are among those providing the fun and singing talents include Fiona Kennedy, Terry Neason and the Alexander Brothers.

Stanley Baxter, Sir Alex Ferguson, Forbes Masson and Billy Connolly have recorded special tributes to Johnny, which will be screened on the night.

"Every performance in the show will be connected with Johnny in some way," said a spokesman for the Citz.

"It promises to be a fantastic night.

"And to add to the fun, Johnny will have no idea what the acts will be doing."

Former Govan shipyard worker Johnny landed his showbiz break in 1951.

While sitting in the University Cafe on Byres Road a total stranger asked him to join an amateur dramatic society show.

Johnny, a father of four, went on to become a theatre star, working in variety as a stand-up comic.

He became one of the great panto dames and in the Eighties hosted STV quiz show Now You See It,.

He has appeared in television shows such as Taggart, and acted alongside Liam Neeson and Billy Connolly in the 1990 film adaptation of the William McIlvanney novel, The Big Man.

In recent years he has returned to straight acting, playing Malcolm Hamilton in the BBC soap River City.

Actress daughter Maureen Beattie said: "It will be a fantastic night. It's great to see so many entertainers coming out to acknowledge his career."
