GLASGOW'S year in the sporting spotlight was brought to a glittering conclusion last night at the SSE Hydro.

Just four months after hosting arguably the biggest and best Commonwealth Games to date, the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards landed in the city.

In what was the prestigious event's 61st year, some of the greatest sports stars in the world were in attendance along with around 12000 fans, including hundreds of volunteers who played their part in the summer Games.

Kenny Dalglish, Gordon Strachan, Sir Jackie Stewart and Team Scotland gold medallist Ross Murdoch were just a few of the Scottish icons who had a role in the ceremony, along with England's Tom Daley and European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley.

Eight awards in total were handed out over the course of the star-studded bash, with the highlight for the bumper home crowd coming when Sir Chris Hoy received the Lifetime Achievement Award by HRH Prince Harry.

The cycling legend, who won five Olympic golds and a silver during his career, said: "To get Callum [his son] home, who has been in hospital for the last eight weeks after being born 11 weeks early, is just amazing. And to cap it off with being awarded the lifetime achievement award is just fantastic.

"I can't quite believe it to be honest.

"It was great to be in Glasgow to witness the Games as a fan on the other side of the fence. But yeah you wish you want to be out there, that will never stop.

"It's a huge honour to be receiving this award. I never thought I'd see my name alongside the likes of Sir Steve Redgrave, David Beckham, Seve Ballesteros and other who've received this incredible honour.

"It makes it even more special to be receiving the award in Scotland."

The main prize of the night went to racing driver Lewis Hamilton, who was awarded with the Sports Personality of the Year trophy by former Scotland and Celtic legend Dalglish and Jonny Wilkinson.

Golfer Rory McIlroy came in second while Jo Pavey was third.

Hamilton takes over the title from Andy Murray, who received the gong last year.
