Apps for sports fans, fashion using 'smart' textiles, sustainable furniture and a record label are among business ideas from Glasgow entrepreneurs that have secured Starter for 6 cash investment this year.

A further £100,000 of support for new-start Scottish businesses was announced, bringing to almost £600,000 the cash pot that Starter for 6 has directly invested in Scottish creative businesses since 2010.

The announcement was made by the Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop MSP, at Glasgow's CitizenM, hotel. The event also saw a showcase of Starter for 6 businesses past and present.

Of the 17 new start businesses - including software, fashion and product designers, architects, music and animation specialists companies - that have secured cash following a Dragons' Den style pitch this year, 13 are based in Glasgow.

Among the success stories are Distrify (international online film distribution and marketing platform); Scotland Loves Anime; Go Think Learning (innovative education apps); fashion designers Jacob Birge Vision and Obscure Couture (shortlisted in the 2013 Scottish Fashion Awards); Word Maker Ltd (a resource for speakers and learners of Arabic); and TenderCush (products for women following breast cancer surgery).
