supermarket bosses were swamped with more than 1000 job applications when 25 vacancies were advertised ahead of a new store opening in Glasgow's West End.

And 20 others were plucked from the dole queue when Britain's biggest independent builders' merchant opened its first city warehouse in the East End.

A major jobs rush was triggered when Tesco, Britain's biggest grocer, advertised 25 jobs online for its new Express store in Great Western Road.

The ad attracted at least 40 applications for each vacancy, with more than 1000 people applying for the jobs.

Store manager Alan Connor and his recruitment team drew up a short list and conducted 66 interviews before every job was filled by a recruit from the West End. But it meant rejection for around 980 others.

Mr Connor said: "I was thrilled by the response. It is great that we are able to create jobs for our local community and help get people back to work."

"I am really pleased with my new team and I'm looking forward to working with them."

The new store opens 15 days before Christmas, on Tuesday, December 10.

Glasgow's East End also got a mini jobs boost with the launch of a new branch by MKM Building Supplies.

It is Britain's biggest independent builders' merchant and has taken a 20-year lease on a 37,000 sq ft warehouse in Nuneaton Street, Dalmarnock, opposite the Emirates Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.

The warehouse is powered by solar energy and biomass technology and the Hull-based merchant plans to run the branch as a centre of excellence for green building materials and techniques, including customer demonstrations on renewables technology and innovation.

David Kilburn, founder and chief executive of the East Yorkshire-based supplier, said: "Next year Glasgow will play host to the Commonwealth Games and our branch is situated directly opposite the Velodrome.

"There are enormous developments currently happening off the back of the Games."

David Reid, a senior surveyor with Glasgow-based DM Hall, said the deal indicates a positive future for Scotland's construction industry
