SUBWAY bosses say Buchanan Street Subway station will stay open during a £3million revamp.

It came after Strathclyde Passenger for Transport (SPT) revealed the station was next to undergo a refurbishment, which is part of a multimillion pound modernisation of the network.

They said that the station will stay open during the works - which will take place at the same time to the extension to Buchanan Galleries - but there would be changes in the way it operates.

A paper going before SPT's Partnership on Friday will recommend that members award the contract, worth £3,169,375, to Graham Construction.

An SPT spokeswoman said: "Buchanan Subway station will remain open throughout modernisation works. However, to accommodate construction there will be temporary changes to the way the station operates.

"Please note that at the same time as the station modernisation work is being undertaken, the southern extension to Buchanan Galleries will be constructed by the shopping centre developer above the Buchanan street subway travelators.

"The work by the developer will necessitate the closure of the Dundas Street entrance and travelators will not be available during the construction period.

"Signage will be in place to redirect customers to entrances and exits off Buchanan street during this time. "
