A CONSULTATION process could lead to the return of vital postal services for a Glasgow community.

Proposals have been put forward to restore Post Office services to Penilee with a modern open-plan local branch with extended opening hours for customers.

Penilee Post Office closed two years ago, leaving vulnerable residents with no choice but to travel further afield.

The proposed location for the branch is a newsagent in Gleddoch Road - just 300 metres from the site of Penilee Post Office which closed in May 2011.

Sue Richardson, Post Office regional network manager for Scotland and Northern England, said: "We understand how important having a Post Office is to residents and we have been working to restore the service, and I am confident that this new branch will meet the needs of the community."

Opening hours at the new location would be 8am to 6.30pm, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and 8am to 4pm on Wednesday and 9pm to 4.30pm on Saturdays.

The new premises would have a wide door with level access and space for wheelchairs and parking facilities include a disabled bay.

Post Office is inviting customers to give their comments on the move in a six-week public consultation.

Local Councillor Alistair Watson welcomed news of the consultation.

He said: "The people of Penilee should have postal services on their doorstep.

"We have vulnerable members of the community who have had to travel for the past two years if they want to access a post office."

During the public consultation Post Office welcomes feedback on any issues before a final decision is taken.

The consultation will close on June, 11. Submissions can be made by Freepost YOUR COMMENTS to Post Office Ltd, via e-mail to comments@postoffice.co.uk call 08457 22 33 44 or Textphone 08457 22 33 55.
