Scottish Secretary Michael Moore and Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon discussed a range of issues surrounding the vote during a meeting in Edinburgh.
After the talks, Mr Moore said: "We are upping the pace and working through the tough issues."
More talks will take place next week as the Scottish and UK governments try to thrash out a deal over the staging of the independence referendum.
