REVELLERS will see temperature start to climb as Glasgow heads towards the Bells.

Early yesterday, Glasgow Airport recorded a low of -6C (21F) although in the city the mercury only fell as low as -4C (25F).

During the day, temperatures struggled to get much above freezing although most places enjoyed bright blue skies and sunshine.

But that did not melt the frost which had formed on many rooftops across the city.

Overnight on Sunday, it was again expected to get as cold as -4C.

Patchy fog, which was a problem in some areas yesterday, could continue throughout most of today.

Forecasters expect Monday to be another dry day with spells of sunshine and temperatures during the day reaching 3C (37F) but falling overnight to just below freezing.

In the early hours of Tuesday, the wind is expected to freshen up which will clear any lingering patches of fog.

It is also expected to be cloudier which will stop the temperature falling as low as Sunday night.

Tuesday will remain chilly with odd spells of drizzle and bright spells.

Drizzle is again expected on Hogmanay with longer spells coming in from the west and it will be a bit breezier.

However temperatures during the final day of 2014 are expected to get as high as 8C (46F) and are not expected to fall much below that overnight.

A weather forecaster for Metrogroup said: "Hogmanay might be cloudy and rainy during the evening so anyone who is out and about will need to wear a coat."

In other parts of Britain the year will end on a cold note with temperatures expected to plunge to a low of -10C (14F)

The Met Office say the cold snap is likely to be worst in northern Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The freezing weather had brought treacherous conditions to roads, with many motorists in Sheffield forced to abandon their cars after becoming snowed in on Friday evening.

More than 100,000 homes were left with power shortages as heavy snow wreaked havoc on electricity cables.

And Sheffield was still suffering the effects of the snowfall nearly 48 hours later when the Blades' League One match with Scunthorpe United was postponed this afternoon for health and safety reasons.

Some lower league matches were also hit by the weather.

Mr Partridge said: "We are going to have some cloud move in as the year ends so we will have the strange situation where it actually warmer at midnight than when people go out at 7pm."

Bookmakers have installed odds of 5/1 that snow will fall in London on New Year's Day, with odds of 9/4 and 3/1 for Edinburgh and Belfast, respectively.
