FOR the last 12 months the excitement has been building as Glasgow prepares for one of the biggest international music events.

The MTV EMA Awards take place on Sunday at the £125million Hydro and the great and good of the music industry will be there.

They were set up in 1994 by MTV Networks Europe to celebrate the most popular mainstream pop songs and singers from America.

With only a fraction of the performing acts, presenters and award winners coming from Europe, the emphasis of the event, rather than promoting European music, was on presenting the popularity of American acts within Europe

EMA began as an alternative to the American MTV Video Music Awards.

Here we take a look at a few facts and figures about the event.
